For the past two decades the back corner of my little store has been speckled with pink and blue. From blankets to board books this area is well stocked with all things baby. Naturally, it is also where many people head to while looking for a baptism gift. However, if they ask for my recommendation, they may be surprised when I lead them to other areas of my shop. While I love a teething rosary as much as the next gal, when you stop to think about it - has there ever actually been a decade prayed on one?
The practice of baptizing babies in the Catholic faith is not an indication of it being an infantile sacrament. Rather we recognize that baptism is the entrance into God’s divine family, it frees us from the bound of sin and grants access sanctifying grace. Considering the magnitude of this gift, we of course wish to administer it at the first opportunity. That being said, it is highly unlikely that a baby is going to have a crisis of faith, but the grace that is provided through baptism is available when that time comes later in life. Having a visual representation of this gift can serve as a reminder of our place in the heart of our Father.
With all of that in mind we circle back to the question - what should you give? The truth is, you already know the answer. Think - what sacramentals have impacted you through your life - a crucifix, rosary, devotional, statue? It can be as simple as a bottle to fill with holy water from the baptismal font. Just something that someday, when your little bundle of joy is more than diapers and drool, they can look to as a symbol of God’s incredible love for them.
If the thought of putting the saint swaddle back on the shelf makes you sad - don’t worry! You can still indulge in beautiful Catholic baby gifts. I couldn’t resist for my own grandchildren either. Just remember that this sacrament will long outlast the baby stage so make sure you include something that will do the same.
